Project Description

Overview

Oshwal Academy Nairobi Senior High, an independent stand-alone A-level institution, had an upgrade of their infrastructure to be more modern and student friendly. This upgrade included the development of a multi-purpose hall to facilitate some of the schools major activities such as examinations, academic fairs, plays, musical events, meetings, among many others.

Program

The new multi-purpose hall turned out to be visually appealing but acoustically too reverberant to result in a pleasing experience for the users. The school then contacted Sound Creations to offer a solution, they had initially requested a sound system design, but on doing a site visit, it was noted that an acoustic treatment was also necessary.

Room Acoustics

The hall had medium weight curtains on one side and the back of the hall which assisted in reducing the direct sunlight in the hall and also reduce the reverberation slightly. The hall required non-intrusive treatments to retain the character of the room, this resulted in the specification of 370M2 of Rockfon Artic, an acoustically absorbent acoustic ceiling,. This was made more aesthetically pleasing by adding a gypsum board bulkhead boarder around the five part divided ceiling. The result is an acoustical improvement over the previous situation, with an added aesthetic impact to the space and maintaining character of the smooth surfaces.

Audio System

The audio system designed consists of a two flown stacks of dB technologies DVA M2M+DVA M2S, 2-Way Active Line Array System, each consisting of two pairs and are installed 5m away from the center.They are controlled by an analogue Allen&Heath 12-channel MixWizard WZ4 12:2 console.

On the ground is a pair of dB Technologies Sub 808D, Active 800 Watt 18″ Subwoofers. On the stage area, the sound system is complimented with a pair of dB Technologies FM12, 600 Watt 12″ / 1″ Active Coaxial Stage Monitors.

  • Dual Channel Handheld Wireless Shure Microphones, BLX 288E/PG58-S8
  • Two (2) Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Shure Microphones PG58.
